Education in Games Summit 2018

Riot Games is heading to the Education in Games Summit 2018

October 11th, 2018|

We’re happy to announce that we’ll be participating in the Education in Games Summit 2018 at ACMI Federation Square, Melbourne! Taking place on 26 October 2018, the Summit is focused on invigorating game-based learning in classroom practice, which is a core focus of our High School League of Legends initiative.

Social Play and Community Manager Ivan Davies will be running a practical 45-minute workshop on how educators can utilise esports to cultivate meaningful behavioural change in students. Ivan will introduce teachers to the key concepts behind online gaming, and why it’s important for educators and students to develop an understanding of online behaviour. The workshop will cover three core topics:

  • the behaviour patterns that exist in competitive online gaming;
  • the key applications that educators can take away from these learnings;
  • the role of teachers and schools in supporting healthy online behaviour in students.

There are no prerequisites for this workshop – you do not need to have a deep understanding of video games to participate.

ACMI’s Senior Games Educator Vincent Trundle said: “The High School League of Legends initiative is fantastic for helping teachers bring video games into the classroom. We love the way it builds the students’ communication aptitude in particular, as that is really useful in all areas of their lives.”

This workshop comes off the back of a successful masterclass at Scitech Perth, where teachers (particularly those with little exposure to online gaming) felt more equipped to talk to students about online play and facilitate positive behavioural outcomes.

One teacher attending the Scitech workshop said: “The masterclass opened up my eyes to the positive aspects of gaming, the behaviours that students experience whilst playing, and just how easy it is to break it down to introduce to students.”
